We first met Victoria, owner of Allegro Dance Boutiques at a trade show in LA. We love the boutique vibe that her stores have, and were so excited to have our products there. We had to check in to see how the boutiques began, and also to see what they feel is missing from the dancewear industry.
Can you tell us a brief history of Allegro Dance Boutique?
Current owner, Victoria Lyman, purchased the small dancewear store in Evanston, IL where she had worked for almost five years during and after college. Frustrated with the product selection, in store experience, and knowledge at many other dancewear stores, Victoria, a dancer herself, set out to create something better, beginning in 2007. The store was renamed, renovated to create a boutique experience, and new and more relevant products were added. Allegro began to gain a reputation as the place to go for pointe shoe fittings in the Chicagoland area, as Victoria, a Bunhead herself, assembled a team of passionate local dancers, all excited to fit pointe shoes and help out others like themselves. In 2012, Allegro added a second location in Barrington, IL.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of running your stores?
Getting to connect with the dance community and our recognition as not just a place for beautiful products, but as a resource within that community. We love being able to help fellow dancers find products that enhance their training and performance experience. Chicago has a vibrant dance scene and we are proud to be a part of it.
Since you have access to many dance/dancewear products, are there any dance products that you feel are missing in industry right now?
Exceptional undergarments. Everyone is so focused on what is on the outside, but so many dancers come to us with problems about what goes underneath. We'd love to see products that really support and provide comfort for all bodies.
